Getting Started
The Plot Map Editor is where you create and refine burial plot outlines on your cemetery map. Upload your map image, draw or detect graves, assign plot codes, and organize everything.
The basic workflow:
- Upload your map image using MAPS
- Draw outlines around each grave (or use Auto-Detect)
- Assign plot codes to each outline
- Click SAVE EDITS when done

AI & Automation
AUTO-DETECT (Lightbulb icon)
Automatically trace grave outlines from your map.
- Make sure your map is uploaded
- Click "Auto-Detect"
- Leave it on Easy for a drawn plan (see below), or switch to Advanced to choose a method yourself
- Click "Analyze" and wait 1-10 minutes
- Review and click "Accept" or "Reject"
⚠️ Important: This finds most graves but not all. Always review before saving, and be ready to fix 5-20% by hand.
Easy and Advanced modes: Auto-Detect opens in Easy mode, which runs a fixed recipe that suits most drawn plans: Line tracing, plot map / schematic, with plot codes read by AI. Advanced lets you pick another map, a different method, a satellite/aerial photo or a one-off upload.
Two detection methods:
- Line tracing — the default. Follows the walls actually drawn on the map, so shapes are true to the plan. It works on scans and on photographs of a drawn plan, and is the better choice for any drawn map. Drawn plans only, not aerial photos. AI is used only to read the plot codes, and only if that box is checked.
- AI vision — asks an AI model to draw the outlines as well as read the codes. Models cannot place outlines precisely, so shapes tend to be simple rectangles that drift off the real boundaries. Use it only for satellite/aerial photos, where there are no drawn lines to trace.
Also read the plot codes with AI is a separate checkbox — leave it unchecked to get outlines faster with placeholder codes (AI-1, AI-2, …) that you fill in by hand.
The Auto-Detect button on the dashboard's Plot Map works the same way: line tracing for drawn maps, AI vision for satellite photos, PDFs and maps stored as an external link.
Works best on: Clear, hand-drawn cemetery plans with solid boundary lines
Attaching to plots you already have: If this map's plots were already imported (e.g. by CSV) before you ever ran detection, check
"Attach to plots that already exist" in the results screen. A detected outline whose code
exactly matches a plot already in your database gets its polygon attached to that existing plot instead of being skipped — the plot's status, owner and section data are left untouched. A code that doesn't match is skipped and reported rather than silently turned into a new plot, unless you also check "Also create new plots for any code that doesn't match".
If codes came back as placeholders instead of the real thing, use "Or paste ordered codes" first: paste your roster one code per line, in the same left-to-right/top-to-bottom order the outlines appear on the map, and it replaces every code (read or placeholder) with the real one before you attach.
MAP CALIBRATION (GPS icon)
Add real-world GPS coordinates to your map.
- Click 3-4 reference points (building corners, known roads)
- Enter their real-world latitude and longitude
- System calculates GPS for every plot automatically
FIELD GPS CAPTURE (Phone icon)
Walk to graves with your phone and record exact GPS locations.
- Click "Field GPS Capture"
- Open the link on your phone
- Walk to each grave and tap to record location
- Data uploads automatically

Visibility Toggles
MAP (Eye icon): Show or hide the background map image
PLOTS (Grid icon): Show or hide plot outlines
GRID (Squares icon): Show or hide alignment grid
SNAP (Magnet icon): Auto-snap points to nearby corners/edges
SATELLITE: Show or hide an uploaded satellite/aerial reference photo, layered behind the map. Only appears once a satellite photo has been uploaded via MAPS; not available in Combined (multi-section) view, since there's no single backing image to layer it under.
Satellite Position
Line up a satellite/aerial photo with your drawn plots. The photo is uploaded stretched to the frame by default, so click Position (next to the Satellite toggle) to drag the photo into place and use the zoom slider to scale it, then Save, Reset (back to centered, un-zoomed), or Cancel. This only changes how the photo is drawn — the uploaded image itself is never modified. Legacy map and each section map keep their own independent position.
COMPARE (Split-View)
See your edits and the original map side-by-side. Each side zooms independently. Perfect for quality checking your work.
CROP / ADJUST
Trim unwanted edges or brighten/darken your map. Use sliders to adjust brightness and contrast, or drag the dashed rectangle to crop.

Tips & Tricks
💡 Snap is your friend: Enable it to make outlines line up perfectly automatically.
💡 Split very large maps: Outlines are usually found fine on a whole sheet, but plot codes are only read for the first 300 plots, so split anything bigger. Smaller sections also help on a dense or faint scan.
💡 Draw clockwise from top-left: It's less confusing than other directions.
💡 Double-click edges to refine: Draw a rough outline, then add corners where you need them.
💡 Always save before closing: Look for the "Unsaved changes" badge in the header. Click SAVE EDITS before you leave.
Troubleshooting
Auto-Detect found nothing or very few graves
Possible reasons:
- Your map is an aerial or satellite photograph, not a drawn plan
- Graves have dotted or dashed lines instead of solid boundaries
- The map has fold creases
- The section is too large
What to try:
- Make sure it's a drawn plan — a scan or a photo of a plan is fine. Line tracing can't read an aerial or satellite photograph, which has no drawn lines; use AI vision in Advanced mode for those
- If a brightly coloured illustration is rejected as a photo, tick This is a drawn map, not a photo in Advanced mode (Easy mode already does)
- Try a smaller section, especially if the map holds more than about 300 graves
- Use Crop/Adjust to brighten a dark/faded scan
- Map it manually using DRAW mode, or trace individual graves with WAND
Detected outlines aren't attaching to my existing plot records
Possible reasons:
- "Attach to plots that already exist" wasn't checked on the results screen
- The outline's code doesn't exactly match a plot code already in your database (a code that reads as a placeholder like "AI-1" will never match)
What to try:
- Check "Attach to plots that already exist" before finishing the run
- If codes came back as placeholders, use "Or paste ordered codes" to give them the real codes first, then attach
The map isn't showing
- Click MAPS and confirm you've uploaded an image
- Click the Map toggle (eye icon) to turn it on
- Click "⊡ Fit" to zoom to fit
My changes aren't saving
- Did you click the green SAVE EDITS button?
- Is "Unsaved changes" still showing? If yes, try again.
- Check your internet connection
- Try refreshing the page if it's stuck
I accidentally deleted something
Before you saved: Refresh the page. Your edits are lost but the old version comes back.
After you saved: It's permanently gone. Re-draw it or restore from a backup.
